BDI Representation Washington

Due to the USA’s vital significance as a partner of German Business, the Bureau of the Representative of German Industry and Trade (RGIT) was founded in 1988 as a joint organization of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) and the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour.

The set-up and tasks of the RGIT are unique in the German promotion of foreign trade and are a result of the special importance of both the economic and the economic-policy ties between the Federal Republic and the USA, as well as the USA’s significance in the multilateral context, in relation to the EU and within the framework of the WTO.

The value of the RGIT arises from three points of approach

  • Firstly, it guarantees a rapid flow of information on political and economic developments and legislative proposals in the USA. The RGIT processes specific information and with its Washington Report provides regular information on current affairs.
  • Secondly, the RGIT represents the interests of individual branches of industry and enterprises vis-à-vis US decision-makers. To this end it has created a network comprising the Administration, the Congress, organisations of the US business community, research institutions and think tanks as well as German subsidiaries.
  • Thirdly, the RGIT maintains close contacts with the international financial institutions located in Washington as well as the United Nations institutions in New York in order to assume a service function for German industry here, too, and for example to boost their chances of participating in projects.
