Dispute over competence in European trade policy must end

In response to the ruling of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) on EU free trade agreements, BDI Executive Board Member Stefan Mair stressed the need for clear and reliable trade agreements. Mair says the EU must work towards shaping globalisation according to European values and interests.

“This ruling must lead to an end of the dispute over competence in European trade policy. The EU needs to take an active role in shaping globalisation in line with European values and interests. This means it must have clearly defined responsibilities and reliable procedures on free trade negotiations. Only then Europe can present itself as a reliable and strong negotiating partner. And only then can the benefits of the trade agreements be swiftly put to use. Years of stalemate in the ratification process are very damaging as they feed uncertainty among companies and consumers.”
