Key enabling technologies (KETs)

Excellent research findings cannot become outstanding products without key enabling technologies (KETs).

Germany and Europe produce outstanding research findings but they need to improve when it comes to implementing those findings in products and applications with commercial potential. The Europe 2020 strategy for competitiveness and growth can only be achieved if the EU undertakes initiatives as part of an enhanced partnership with member states and industrial enterprises. The second pillar in Horizon 2020, the Industrial Leadership part of the programme, aims to support market-proximate developments in the area of industrial technologies and aerospace research.

These key enabling technologies (KETs) are:

  • Information and communication technologies
  • Nanotechnologies
  • Advanced materials
  • Biotechnology
  • Advanced manufacturing and processing
  • Aerospace

A High Level Expert Group on Key Enabling Technologies will define these key enabling technologies and differentiate between them. The expert group is a high-ranking industrial panel that advises the European Commission on important industrial policy issues related to key enabling technologies.
