The free trade agreements of the European Union are a success story. However, the utilization of these agreements by European exporters and importers consistently falls short of its potential. In a comprehensive survey of German companies and industry associations, BDI has examined the reasons for this paradox and, together with its members, has derived policy recommendations for better utilization and future design of EU free trade agreements.
