A modern, high-performance transportation infrastructure in line with actual demand is an essential prerequisite for economic competitiveness, growth, and prosperity. Through a a dense network of railways, roads and waterways, Germany's transportation infrastructure seems to provide a solid foundation to master key challenges of the future. However, the modernization level of the German network for all modes of transportation has deteriorated noticeably. Therefore, Roland Berger proposes solutions for this problem drawn from examples of best practice in neighbouring European countries with comparable structures and general conditions.
