The Safeguard Instrument

In the discussion on European Open Strategic Autonomy, there is increasing talk about the use of safeguards in trade protection. This means that this previously little-known and relatively rarely used instrument is increasingly moving into the focus of the trade defence debate. The BDI suggests that in view of the growing challenges in international trade, the EU Commission should examine the use of safeguards without prejudice to the outcome.
