Sumi Somaskanda

Sumi Sumaskana is a freelance reporter, writer, editor and news anchor who has lived and worked in Berlin for more than a decade. She covers politics, breaking news, immigration and business.
Raised in Rochester, New York, she earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from Northwestern University in Chicago and reported for local and regional television stations and a 24-hour news channel. She joined DW in early 2010 as a correspondent, writer and anchor of the Journal news program.
She is currently a senior news anchor at DW News (Deutsche Welle), covering Germany for various international publications, including The Atlantic, Foreign Policy, Washington Post, Al Jazeera, Global Post, Newsweek, PRI, and USA Today. She was an editor at Berlin Policy Journal, Germany's first English-language foreign policy magazine.
She regularly moderates panel discussions and conferences in both Germany and the U.S. and teaches at the CIEE Global Institute in Berlin. Sumi is an alumna of the Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program and part of the BMW Foundation-Responsible Leaders Network. In addition to her native English, she is fluent in German and Spanish and proficient in Tamil.
