In late June 2022, talks began between the EU and India on a free trade agreement, an investment protection agreement and a geographical indications agreement. After the failure of free trade negotiations between the two partners in 2013, this constitutes a new attempt to improve economic relations between the EU, India's second largest trading partner after the United States, and the South Asian country.

Entering into force in February 2019, the free trade agreement between the European Union and Japan (Economic Partnership Agreement, EPA) is the world’s largest free trade zone. The agreement removes most of the tariffs and many legal obstacles in trade between the two economies. Moreover, two partners sharing the same values have now established closer ties and can jointly set standards in the areas of labor, security, climate, and consumer protection.

Asia-Pacific is one of the fastest growing regions in the world and an important growth market for the German economy. The exchange with the countries in the region is more important than ever - especially in economically and politically unstable times. This year's Asia-Pacific Conference of German Business (APK) made an important contribution to this.

With its current growth rates as well as its young and growing population, India provides numerous opportunities for German industry. However, Hubert Lienhard, APA Chairman, emphasizes that India needs to invest in its infrastructure and legal certainty. Then, German businesses would expand their commitment in the country.

Asian economies represent increasingly important trading partners and sales markets for German industry. Numerous German production sites are located in many countries. Furthermore, research and development for new products and technologies is carried out jointly. Free trade agreements with the region must ensure that this trend continues.
